Jensen PLUS formed part of a team led by Cox Architects to gain approval for the complete redevelopment of the iconic Her Majesty's Theatre in Grote Street. The old theatre building was dated, not fit for purpose for contemporary and large scale theatre productions and in need of complete redevelopment. A listed State Heritage Place, the proposal involved the demolition of all of the original building except for the Grote Street and Pitt Street facades and an internal stage wall signed by artists over the theatres history.
The challenge of the redevelopment, aside from the heritage implications, was the interface of the theatre with the adjacent Rowlands Apartments, waste management and the loading dock and arrangements within Pitt Street during productions.
The development has increased the capacity of the theatre near to its original capacity, as well as provided a suite of contemporary amenity and entertainment facilities within an adjacent annexe structure to the west of the original building.
