The City of Charles Sturt engaged Jensen PLUS to assist with public realm concepts and visualisations at Queen Street and Elizabeth Street in inner-suburban Croydon.
The precinct is a thriving area, well known for its cafes, quirky shops and strong community.
The design at Queen Street considered intersection improvements to prioritise pedestrian safety and accessibility, including new zebra crossings. Landscaping opportunities were explored with new garden beds throughout.
The concept design for Elizabeth Street (Robert to William Street) proposes upgrading footpaths and kerb ramps to meet disability access standards and improvements in front of historic shopfronts.
A raised intersection at Robert and Elizabeth Street includes new garden beds and landscaping, bollards and kerb realignment to enhance outdoor dining spaces. Adjusting the stormwater inlet and narrowing the intersection to 6 metres aims to improve pedestrian amenities and safety.
The plan for William Street includes kerb realignment at the Elizabeth Street bend to reinforce traffic movement changes and a raised road with a cobblestone pattern.
A new tree is proposed at the parking area entrance, with a DDA-compliant parking space and space for 16 cars. Existing trees remain and new garden beds and plantings added.
