Chesser Street is an important civic space that provides access to South Australia’s Births, Deaths and Marriages Office, located on the ground floor of the Chesser House building. It’s also a busy pedestrian route linking Pirie Street and Currie Street, surrounded by major office buildings.

In 2021, landowner Chesser Properties engaged Jensen PLUS to help renew the public realm at Chesser Street, the doorstep to their property. The design upgrades a narrow street into a pedestrian laneway that is stylish, simple and safe.

The street has been closed to through-traffic (installing removable bollards), while the hardscape has been redesigned into a high quality paved surface and grated drainage redesigned to create a smoother walking surface, while feature banding is introduced to match neighbouring façades. All of this in a complex environment with many underground services present.

The project also refurbished the iconic vine-laden arbour structure over Chesser Street to ensure its longevity.

As well as a streetscape design example in a CBD context, the project is a case study for private and public partnerships, where building owners and local governments can work together to invest in redeveloping public spaces, benefiting building customers and the city community.
