Jensen PLUS has worked with Mount Barker District Council since 2014 as Gawler Street evolved from a traditional shopping street into a more leisure focused heart for a fast growing town. This change has created edgy new cafes and shops, and the use of parklets to activate the street with outdoor dining.
In 2015 we completed a Main Street Strategy for Gawler Street that contained 10 priorities for improving the main street. These included upgrades to the arrival points along the street, more seating and gathering places, better pedestrian crossings, refreshed landscaping, and the installation of new feature lighting.
A team led by Jensen PLUS then prepared detailed designs for the next phase of streetscape upgrade works in Stephen Street. This upgrade provided a raised plateau at the Gawler Street/Stephen Street intersection and extended north and south into Stephen Street, providing multi-use public spaces and an interesting, artistic pavement treatment. All landscaped areas were upgraded and new street furniture was provided, while opportunities were made for integrated public art in multiple locations.
In November 2019, Stephen Street was officially opened with a street party. Along with the new Gawler Street gateway, and bespoke seating and lighting, we really feel we have achieved the 2015 strategy’s goal of ‘Making a Great Street Even Better’.
