Paringa is a beautiful town on the banks of the River Murray, serving as a gateway to South Australia from Victoria and boasting historic landmarks and a strong community feel.
The Paringa town centre has a small main street (Murtho Road) located off the Sturt Highway that includes a combination of commercial and residential properties.
Given the small scale of the town and main street, we adopted a placemaking approach inspired by the Project for Public Spaces (USA) ‘Power of 10’ idea. The idea behind this placemaking concept is that places are most successful and active when users have a wide range of reasons to be there. Often ten or more activities is said to be ideal!
The Paringa Place Plan proposes ten practical yet meaningful projects for ‘improving the look, feel and functionality of the Paringa main street environment'.
These include a nature play space, meeting and picnic spaces, safer pedestrian crossing points, wayfinding signage, a trailhead for walking and cycling, and new lighting.
Community engagement was undertaken on the plan, with 73 responses received from a range of age groups.
Renmark Paringa Council has since secured funding for several of the place projects, with construction to commence in mid 2024.
